My Approach

Gaining the Tools in Your Toolbox

I have had the pleasure of working with a significant amount of very different individuals throughout my career, a consistent aspect in my work with all has been that I am an interactive, straight forward , forthright , nonjudgmental and  honest while still providing a safe and caring environment for you to work in. The specifics of treatment and what interventions an individual will benefit from most is based on their starting point and will be different for each person. Everyone experiences a unique journey throughout life and what is beneficial for one may not be beneficial for another. Psychological support varies from structured psychotherapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and supportive therapy to contingency management.

I am experienced in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) values based work, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills based work which is applied in combination in order to be best suited to the needs of the individual. These are referred to as Evidenced Based Practices described by the APA as ‘the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture and preferences’. Increasing a person’s insight into symptoms, identifying the goals they want to achieve, addressing patterns of their behaviors and their impact, identifying triggers or vulnerabilities and providing psycho- education are standard aspects of my treatment.  Prior to addressing major life events or stressors I will work with you in order to increase the implementable skills to cope with the complicated emotions that may arise and likely will arise when working with difficult emotional issues and situations. I like to refer to these as ‘your tools in your toolbox’.
